“If we are lucky in life, work becomes an expression of who we are and one of our most important anchors of meaning.” ~ John Abrams
Rugg Valley is nothing without the people who work here. After thirty seven years in business, many faces have come and gone, but all have helped shaped Rugg into what it is today. The culture of our workplace is very important. We feel the best work is accomplished when people are engaged in what they are doing, feel rewarded by the outcome and have a good time while doing it. Our core group of employees have been with Rugg for many years which is a testament to our culture.
Crew - Most of the 2013 crew, minus a few slackers- Andrew Petraska, Lydia Simonetti and Casey Henson.
Don Ameden - Donny Ameden has been at Rugg longer than anyone can remember! He has seen and been responsible for many changes over the twenty plus years he has been here. He has a second nature skill on any piece of equipment and can pick up a teaspoon and stir your coffee from inside an excavator. He has a wonderfully curious mind about how things work and is always thinking about how to improve the outcome of any project. If Donny likes a song, he will memorize all the words. Ask him to demonstrate this amazing ability to recite all the words sometime! Donny lives with his wife Patti and two sons Cody and Taber in Londonderry.
Jason Farrar - Jay started with Rugg Valley about 15 years ago while he was attending the University of Vermont, where he earned a degree in horticulture. With the occasional interruption he has been here ever since. With his many years of experience in all fields of our business, he has become not only one of our lead construction foremen but a valuable compatriot in the running of the entire business. His twins, Maya and Aiden help out too. He lives in Andover.
Jon Farrar - Jon Farrar has a passion for trees. He joined Rugg Valley after working many years in tree service and enjoys nothing better than the challenge of dropping a tree in a difficult location. But luckily Jon’s skills go way beyond killing trees! He knows a tremendous amount about woody plants and his pruning skills are unmatched. As a farmer’s son, he also has a tender touch with a tractor. Jon lives with his wife Jen and his kids Evan and Lily about a ten minute jog through the woods from Rugg Valley.
Andrew Petraska - Andrew Petraska joined Rugg Valley in 2009 after graduating from VTC with a major in Horticulture. He returned to his native Vermont after growing up in Florida and anyone who knows him will agree that Vermont is where he belongs. He is easy going and willing to do "whatever it takes" to get the job done. Drew has a wide range of skill sets and is keen on expanding his horticultural and landscaping knowledge. He has strong mechanical skills and can be found at Wayne’s Auto Repair in Londonderry when he is not at Rugg. Andrew is an avid hunter and is the only one on the crew who has brought in a deer three years in a row. Drew and his wife Molly are proud parents to their son Sawyer who was born in 2011. We look forward to many years of his good natured presence and lots more venison.
Mark Wright - Mark has pretty much devoted his life to making Rugg Valley "work" (in addition to building a home and family here in the valley). Rugg Valley is his passion and the people that work here are part of his extended family. His immediate family include his wife Sunny and their four fabulous children Emma, Maisie, Clem and Hannah, fantastic son-in-law Tommy and fantabulous granddaughter Willa !
Cindy Pearson - Cindy Pearson has been a part of our crew for many years and she knows our properties like the back of her hand. She is keenly interested in plants and keeps us all in line with her attention to details. Cindy is our resident grandmother on the crew. Despite her young years, she has five grandchildren who keep her and her husband Barry entertained and busy. Barry is a familiar face at Brown Enterprises. They live on Cross Road in South Londonderry.
Heidi Lynn - Heidi is an indispensable part of Rugg Valley. She has worked as Rugg’s bookkeeper for more than twenty years and has seen and instituted many changes. To speak to the ultimate authority in this company is to speak directly to Heidi. She makes sure all paperwork and slips are organized and bills and receipts are paid and filed. No one comes or goes without Heidi being on top of it. All this is done with the biggest smile and infectious laughter. Heidi lives in Dorset with her husband Mike, two sons Carter and Myles, and her golden lab Bunker.
Sarah Jez - Sarah Jez's main passion is snow and all the activities that go with it. Her best days start with making tracks on Bromley and end with a sunset ride on Stratton. Beyond shredding, Sarah has great horticultural skills and knowledge and is a rugged hard worker. She joined Rugg Valley in 2010 with many years experience in landscape maintenance. She also brings us a great laugh and a sense of humor, which help make the days speed by. She is eager to expand her horizons into the construction side of Rugg.
Will Perkins - Will Perkins joined Rugg Valley in the Spring of 2010 after working for several landscapers in the area. Despite his young years, he brings a vast array of skills and a can do attitude which makes it easy to ask him to do even the most routine chores. He stepped up to the mowing plate in 2011 and has done an amazing job of keeping track of our mowing accounts. Wilhelm is our resident jokester and takes great delight in keeping the boss's blood pressure boiling.
Casey Henson - Casey brings to Rugg Valley the snowbird perspective. She and her husband Craig spend their winters in Costa Ricka and summer in the mountains of Landgrove. She has been gardening all her life and brings great knowledge and experience to Rugg Valley - including the recently acquired skills of tropical gardening. Casey has earned the nickname of "the galloping squirrel" on our team, as she is always on the go and does not hesitate to throw herself into anything that needs to be done. We hope she'll keep migrating north for at least a few more seasons.
Derek Adams - Derek Adams joined Rugg Valley in the Spring of 2010 and brings all the enthusiasm of youth to our team. He arrived here with very little specific landscape experience, but quickly discovered that this was something he had great aptitude for and he developed a passion for our work over the course of the season. He learned a great deal in one season and we thoroughly expect to see Derek spending more time in the machines and learning the ropes from some of the more experienced members of our crew. He spends his winters as a mason's assistant so we are hoping he can bring some of those skills to Rugg Valley.
Monime Saunders - Monime joined Rugg Valley in the Spring of 2010. She brought with her a wealth of plant material knowledge and greenhouse experience. She is a lady of actions rather than words and in the course of a couple of seasons she has stepped up our nursery operation and taught us a new definition of “getting things done.” Her dry sense of humor and upbeat attitude reminds us daily how lucky we are to be doing what we do. “It’s a beautiful thing” is her daily mantra. Monime splits her time between being out with the maintenance crew and doing greenhouse work in the valley. We look forward to her expertise and strong work ethic guiding us for many years into the future.
Ryan Erickson - Ryan joined our crew in 2011 and has settled right in with his warm smile and laid back attitude. But don't be fooled, this guy can mow ! He and Will keep our lawns looking sharp throughout the season. In addition, Ryan is learning the trick of the trade of pruning. He and Jenny live on Middletown Road with their two munchkins Kai and Willow.
Ryan and Jenny have Kai and Willow who was born last Auguist
Matt Healy - Matt has become an integral part of Rugg continuing on a smooth path. He is our small engine mechanic, and handles our repairs from spark plug changes to complete rebuilds . He is also a perfect fit anywhere he's needed when not in the shop, with his multiple skills and attention to details. He lives with his girlfriend, Sharon, and their big black lab "Jack" in Londonderry.
Lydia Simonetti - Lydia grew up about a mile down the road from Rugg Valley and is a proud 2011 graduate of Burr and Burton. She joined our crew in 2012 and brings a smile and a laugh to work every day. She is an integral member of the maintenance crew with many years of experience in the garden. Lydia is also a key player in our wreath making operation. She holds down the Bromley Market during the winter and is known far and wide around the Mountain Towns.
Mindy Miller - Hailing from Montana, Mindy joined the lawn maintenance crew in 2012 and now does pretty much everything from mowing to stone work. She brings a smile and a joke to work with her everyday. She lives in Andover with her husband, Zen, and their two big dogs.
Jenny Strecker - Jenny has joined our crew for 2013 after heading up our Farmer's Market effort last year. She brings a great sense of excitement to our greenhouse operation and a practical sense of how things work . You'll see her frequently at the Farmer's Market this season - often with Kai and Willow in tow.
Ian Black - Ian started working at Rugg in 2006, during the summers while he attended Montana State University in Bozeman. After graduating with a Landscape Design degree in 2009, he worked in Montana for a bit, then found his way back to Vermont, and Rugg Valley, in 2011. He does a little bit of everything here at Rugg, from drafting and design work to building stone walls and terraces. We hope that Ian will decide that Vermont is a better place to settle than Montana.
Daniel Mosle - Dan is our resident medicinal plant expert and is keenly interested in cultivated plants. He has lived, worked and been educated all across the United States. He brings a extensive set of skills and a sense of humor to work every day. He is extremely level headed and willing to tackle any project that is put in his path. He is also our resident meteorologist and always has his "eye on the sky" . Wickie Leaks is his faithful Border Collie friend, and a frequent visitor in the Valley.
